Getting ready for Stage 2 of Meaningful Use

Stage 2 of the Meaningful Use requirements will demand more aggressive Computerised Physician Order Entry (CPOE) use, but many hospitals have been slow in increasing the volume of orders.

The earliest that the Stage 2 criteria will be effective is in the fiscal year 2014 for eligible hospitals and critical access hospitals (CAHs) or calendar year 2014 for eligible professionals, according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services website.

"Getting physicians engaged is 99 per cent of the adoption," said Chris Snyder, Chief Medical Information Officer, Peninsula Regional Medical Center, a speaker at the upcoming marcus evans National Healthcare CMO/CMIO Summit 2013.

"Engaging the clinical staff is key. They have to be more involved in the build and development of these tools; that is the only way they will be used effectively. The reason why CPOE is a big element now is because it is impacting physicians. Many of the nurses and ancillaries have been using computers for years, but it is new to physicians," Snyder commented.

Going from Stage 1 to Stage 2 of Meaningful Use means the volume of orders going through the system will increase. Snyder said: "The only way to do that is by getting more folks to adopt it. However, hospitals have to realise that the adoption is only as good as the leverage they have within their medical staff."

"We are just beginning a multi-decade journey of development of content, that will allow patients to have choices with providers and hospitals, and reimbursement will be based on true quality," Snyder went on to say. "Hospitals have to look at the bigger picture. CPOE is only one of the elements of Meaningful Use. For years hospitals have used claims data from charging and billing to measure quality in care. For true quality data, Meaningful Use will be the foundation of data going forward."

The marcus evans National Healthcare CMO/CMIO Summit 2013 will take place in Atlanta, Georgia, March 14-15. For more information, please visit the event website:
