Energy firm finds gas off Greenland

British energy firm Cairn has discovered gas near the coast of Greenland – a sign that there could be untapped oil in that location.

The exploration company has stated that there were "early indications of a working hydrocarbon system" in Baffin Bay, although Greenpeace thinks a drilling operation there would be "grave news".

The recent discovery is something of a surprise, after previous drilling expeditions in the 70s and at the turn of the century found there to be no oil off the Greenland coast.

However, Cairn's chief executive Sir Bill Gammell remarks that finding gas there has confirmed the region is worth further exploration.
