VC spending on life sciences up in Q2

The levels of venture capital (VC) in the life sciences sector rose by more than 50 per cent (52 per cent) in the second quarter of 2010, it has been revealed.

The new Quarterly Recovery report from PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) shows that funding over the period totalled in excess of $2bn ($2.1bn; £1.31bn), which came after investment in the sector dropped by more than a quarter (27 per cent) in the first quarter of the year.

The year-on-year figures for the first half of 2010 were also positive, up more than a quarter (26 per cent) to almost $3.5bn ($3.4bn; £2.13bn).

For all sectors, venture capitalists invested $6.5bn (£4.07bn) in the second quarter of this year, with life sciences staying as the most-invested-in sector, a position it has held since 2005.
