UK retail sales beat forecasts

UK retail sales for July exceeded analysts' expectations, showing growth of 1.1 per cent, rather than the 0.4 per cent predicted.

These figures come from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) and represent the highest month-on-month increase since February.

The British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) is particularly buoyed by the stats, "as they come after a good figure in June, which may have been inflated by World Cup-related spending".

A range of shops saw growth, including jewellery shops and sport equipment stores, although food sales fell by 1 per cent.

However, the BCC's chief economist David Kern warns that "there is no room for complacency," adding that "the full impact of the emergency Budget’s austerity measures is yet to take effect."
