Over the last couple of years oil prices have been on a rollercoaster ride. The industry was rich, with projects in high demand due to the all time high price of $147 per barrel. Now the industry is facing a very different situation with prices at a low of $40.15, putting both executed and planned projects into jeopardy and an unwanted surplus in the supply chain.
As a result procurement within the industry is receiving a mixed outcome. On one side, operating companies are in a better position to negotiate and can benefit from the excess of suppliers happy to cooperate. On the other hand the industry runs the risk of project scarcity to procure for in the first place.
Given the cost pressures of today, customers are placing increasing pressure on their suppliers, leaving them with the option of reducing prices or pushing back. With supply chains shifting and volumes erratic, the quality of relationship and contract management has never been more important.
Emerging markets still pose a challenge to international players operating globally. Liberalised markets and global suppliers have made it more essential than ever before to adopt a globally effective procurement strategy that accommodates cultural complexities.
Procurement is a function which is constantly changing as the context changes. Increased globalisation, a continuous approach to sustainability and the market downturn demands continuous innovation and adaptation to procuring.
