1 Economies around the world were impacted in varying degrees when the global financial crisis hit in 2008 and the automobile market is no exception. In 2008, the development of the automobile market globally faced changes in product structure, price distribution and competitive strategies.
However as America’s auto titans are dismantling their global empires, the sales in China are up and this year China is projected to displace Japan as the world’s largest car producer. Recognising the fact that China is now already equipped with world class business and manufacturing capabilities, the Chinese automakers are on a quest to buy up iconic brands to gain the knowledge in technological know-how, systems integration and in designing new vehicles from scratch to help them leap past long established competitors.
On the 20th March 2009, China’s State Council released the Automotive Industry Readjustment and Revitalisation Plan, marking the automotive industry one of the first industry shortlisted with a revitalization programme. The plan is an important testament to the government’s focus on the automotive industry as a key driver in propelling China’s economy in this economic slowdown in the shadow of a world financial crisis.
