By some estimates, about half of the US military casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan are related to attacks with improvised explosive devices on convoys, many of which are carrying fuel. The Pentagon, which traditionally has not made saving energy much of a priority, has launched initiatives to find alternative fuel sources, and currently has a diverse energy portfolio.

Discussion will focus on the renewable path to energy security and how funds in the stimulus package have been appropriated towards a clean energy goal. Interactive breakout sessions will consider base level energy usage and the reduction of operational dependency on fossil fuels. A consideration will also be given to energy consumption and climate change in a workshop discussion.
