Optimizing Manufacturing Operations

Jim Cullen of JS International Shipping Corp., a solution provider at the marcus evans Manufacturing CXO Summit 2013, on optimizing manufacturing processes.

Interview with: Jim Cullen, Chief Executive Officer, JS International Shipping Corp.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Speed and intelligence in the supply chain are the primary components for success in manufacturing operations, Jim Cullen, Chief Executive Officer of JS International Shipping Corp believes. Accumulating components in the supply chain is costly and leads to inefficiencies, he pointed out.

From a solution provider company at the upcoming marcus evans Manufacturing CXO Summit 2013, in Las Vegas, Nevada, April 8-9, Cullen draws attention to the most pressing issues in the manufacturing space today, and discusses what role speed and intelligence can play in the supply chain.

What are manufacturing executives’ greatest challenges today?

They are facing cost control challenges. Many of them think that made-to-order procurement solutions are always best, but it cannot be done in every industry. Therefore, inventories are accumulating, which is excess costs in supply chains.

How can they add value to their supply chain?

Speed is of utmost importance in every step of the supply chain. For example, in the forwarding and logistics world, what JSI can do is act as an intelligent conveyor belt or a staging shelf for parts and components in the supply chain process.

It is crucial to be as efficient as possible with speed and cost and to have the optimum number of parts at any given stage in a manufacturing process, as accumulating components is costly.

What makes a supply chain flexible and able to respond to changing consumer demands?

A robust information technology system will give manufacturing managers the window into exactly where and how many components they need, the optimum number for each stage of manufacturing.

Speed and intelligence will allow them to move and execute quickly, as they will have access to the information they need to make decisions.

What is your outlook on the manufacturing industry? What opportunities do you see in this space?

The cost of land and labor will always influence decisions in this industry. When manufacturers think of the best place to locate plants or facilities, they consider places where they can operate economically and efficiently. A large component of that is labor. Everyone relied on China for many years, for its low cost but educated workforce, but labor costs are continuing to escalate there. There are now places that are cheaper, but they are lacking in some infrastructure.

In the future, I expect the manufacturing of high technology goods to continue in China, with lower technology goods moving to Cambodia, Vietnam and India, where labor is cheaper. I see manufacturing spreading out throughout the world, rather than being concentrated in one place as it has been so far.
