‘Security of our nation required that we act’ – Dick Cheney

As the 10th anniversary of the September 11 attacks in the US approaches this weekend, former Vice President Dick Cheney has defended the War on Terrorism and the US-led invasion of Iraq.

The former marcus evans summit keynote speaker stands his ground on the reasons for the invasion and the perceived threat by Saddam Hussein attesting that President Bush did the right thing.

“After 9/11, no American president could responsibly ignore the steady stream of reporting we were getting about the threat posed by Saddam Hussein…The terrorists of 9/11 were armed with airplane tickets and box cutters. The next wave might bring chemical, biological or nuclear weapons… The security of our nation and of our friends and allies requires that we act. And so we did,” he said in his autobiography entitled ’In My Time: A Personal and Political Memoir’.

Recalling the events of 9/11 he said he remembers it “like it was only yesterday” and describes the Secret Service rushing him out of his office as the plane hit the tower.

Cheney recalls watching the scene of the towers crashing to the ground with fellow White House colleagues, and knowing that at that moment thousands of people were being killed.

The former Vice President also says that he hasn’t as yet endorsed any candidate ahead of the 2012 Presidential Race.

Dick Cheney was a keynote speaker at the marcus evans Tax Officers Summit held in Las Vegas in November 2010.
